The onion dome of the South-east Equatorial 28 in. refracting telescope installed 1894.  Installed by Christie, the Onion shape came from adapting the building for the new, larger telescope replacing an earlier instrument.    The 28 in. was in front line research until 1914.

The telescope uses the English Equatorial mounting designed and installed by Airy for the earlier instrument, the 12¾ in Merz.

The present dome is a replica in fibre-glass of the original papier mache on cast iron structure.  The original was shredded by a bomb blast in 1944.  The telescope was unharmed.
